Engineering Labs

Engineering Laboratories and workshops provide students with hands-on experiences in engineering design activities for electrical and mechanical engineering. Engineering tools, devices with state-of-the-art computer hardware and software tools to assist in the construction and analysis of engineering designs. The laboratory experiences provide opportunity to students to explore and learn core engineering practices and prepare for industrial environment. DHA Suffa University has established labs and workshops for electrical and mechanical engineering departments.

Electrical Engineering Labs
A number of teaching laboratories are being established in Electrical Engineering Department. State-of-the-art test and measurement equipment and simulation software are used to ensure mastery of Electrical Engineering concepts by students. For this purpose DSU has established following labs.

Circuits and Electronics Lab
Circuits and Electronics laboratory at DSU is state of the art with all the latest electronic equipments available, including Digital Oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Spectrum Analyzers and Digital Multimeters. This lab’s purpose is to allow electrical engineering students to develop and test electronic circuits and inculcate circuit design skills in them. Recently Elvis boards procured from National Instruments (NI) have also been added, which can be interfaced with the educational software Labview.

Computing Lab
DSU’s Computing laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art thin client computers. The lab is designed to allow the students experiment with the computing technology to solve engineering problems. The lab is purpose built with an environment which stimulates student’s creativity. The lab is connected with the DSU data center which provides the direct access to Linux and windows environments. A wide variety of engineering related applications are available in this lab, such as Matlab, Labview, C++ compilers & CAD Tools, to facilitate the students.

Digital Systems Lab
Digital Systems laboratory at DSU offers basic and advanced logic design experiments ranging from logic gates to sequential logic design. The Students are provided with both software and hardware resources to design and test digital logic circuits. The Modelsim software is available, which is an industry standard to design digital logic circuits. Furthermore, logic analyzers to test the logic circuits, traditional combinational and sequential logic circuits, reconfigurable logic resources in the shape of FPGAs are also available in this lab. The lab is also equipped with various microprocessor and microcontroller kits for courses like computer architecture, microcontroller- / microprocessor-based design, and system programming. Digital systems laboratory caters to the needs of MS and PhD level research as well.

Programming Lab
DSU’s Programming lab is designed to allow the students to experiment with the latest programming tools and technologies and it provides students with an environment which allows them to develop software. This lab is also connected with the DSU data center which provides the direct access to Linux and windows environments. In this lab modernized programming tools and programming related applications such as Java, C++, Python, and Eclipse are installed.

Communication Systems Lab
DSU has state-of-the-art Communication Systems and Digital Signal Processing laboratory. Communication systems part of the lab has a powerful combination of hardware "UNIVERSAL SOFTWARE RADIO PERIPHERAL" (USRP) and open-source software GNU Radio where Digital signal processing experiments can be run. This hardware-software combination is very powerful and flexible, therefore can be used in teaching communication systems courses such as implementing real-time communication systems, recording real RF signals for off-line processing, and converting signals that were generated by a computer to RF. Some relatively simple real-time communication systems that could be implemented using the USRP are listed below: FM Radio Receiver, RDS Decoder, AM Radio Receiver, Radio-Controlled Clock, AM or FM Transmitter, Family Radio Services (FRS) Walkie-Talkie and Remote control. As for the digital signal processing part of the lab, purpose specific hardware equipments such as Texas Instruments DSP kits and Xilinx FPGAs are available to students to run DSP experiments. This lab can cater to MS and PhD level research too.

Control Systems and Electrical Machines Lab
Electric Machines & Control laboratory at DSU comprises of latest electrical machine trainers who give students, hands on experience on AC as well as DC motors & generators. The lab also contains educational hardware acquired from National Instruments (NI), for the use of designing, development and testing of various feedback control systems. The main purpose of this laboratory is to inculcate necessary system design skills in the students and to prepare them for a successful career as a ‘Control & Automation engineer' in the industry.

Embedded Systems Lab
Embedded Systems laboratory in DSU is yet another state-of-the-art laboratory. The equipment such as Raspberry Pi, AVR microcontroller kits, embedded linux platforms, industrial controllers and Xilinx FPGAs are available in this lab. Further, experimental embedded systems are built in this lab which cater to advanced research.

Applied Physics Lab
Applied Physics laboratory at DSU is well-equipped with tools and equipments imported from Germany which cater the needs of the experimental work to be done by students. Currently, experimental equipments for Electromagnetics, Acoustics, Mechanics, and Optics are available in Physics lab.

Applied Chemistry Lab
Applied Chemistry laboratory has been designed to cater the needs of undergraduate Electrical and Mechanical engineering programs, with a vision to further upgrade it to the level of postgraduate research. The environment, health and safety of DSU students and staff is of paramount importance therefore the laboratory is equipped with UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Conductivity meter, PH meter, Drying Oven, Analytical balance, Laboratory balance, Magnetic Stirrer, and Standard Calibrated Glassware. DSU aims to provide Chemistry lab services to the industries and academic sector in near future, for which the University is planning to implement the best Quality Management and Laboratory Management Systems.

Mechanical Engineering Labs
The DSU Mechanical Laboratories are designed to supplement the Degree Program. DSU Mechanical Engineering Department places utmost importance on lab courses; hence efforts have been made to have the laboratories equipped with modern state of the art equipment, which allows the student to apply his or her theoretical knowledge to test engineering principles with effective test and measuring techniques. The laboratories are designed to provide hands-on experience in basic measurement and instrumentation equipment and the application of classroom theory. Students may receive additional hands-on experience by selecting technical elective courses with laboratory components. An additional feature is the use of software with high speed computers to design and verify advanced concepts of engineering like Thermal Fluids behaviour, Heat Transfer and its effects, Structural Analysis, Optimization of Processes, Vibrations and Robotics principles.For this purpose DSU has established the following Laboratories:

Materials Lab
This laboratory contains all the required and highly sensitive materials testing equipment imported from various international suppliers. These equipment includes Universal Material Tester, Charpy Impact Tester, Torsion Tester, Hardness Tester, Polariscope, Strain Gauge Kit and Metallographic Microscope to name a few. Materials laboratory has also procured state-of-the-art specimen preparation equipment for metallographic analysis. The equipment helps in the preparation of samples for metallographic analysis under metallographic microscope. Further, for advanced research in nanotechnology the laboratory has been equipped with an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) capable of resolving surface features on the order of fractions of a nanometer.

All these equipment provide students with opportunities to explore the field of materials which is now poised as a growing need by many industries. As a consequence it ensures that our students are well-aware about the technologies before they step into the practical world. With the recent influx of industrial projects in this laboratory, multiple student research groups have been structured for surface studies relating to fractures and failures.

Machines Lab
Machines Lab aims to develop an understanding of mechanical components such as drives (gear, belt and chain), governors, gyroscope, flywheel, cams and related hardware. Further, it also caters to the curriculum requirements of Mechanical Vibrations curriculum relating to spring-mass damper systems, static and dynamic balancing and forced vibration studies of multi-order systems.With the integration of instrumentation and aerodynamics equipment, this lab has become a hub for students undertaking projects of national and international stature.

CIM Center
A state-of-the-art Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) center has been established in Mechanical Engineering Department with the aim to educate students with principles of modern manufacturing. Equipment such as 3D scanner, 3D Printer. Further an Industrial size 3-axis CNC Milling Machine has been deployed in the first phase with deployment of industrial robots, machine vision and CNC lathe to follow in the second phase. Students undertake lab classes related to CAD/CAM in this laboratory and develop a part from its initial concept to the final form.

Mechanics Lab
Mechanics Laboratory at DSU is prepared according to the requirements of various ME courses. The lab demonstration and practicals are designed to facilitate explanation of the concepts of applied mechanics. These laboratory exercises include explanation of effects of peripheral forces such as in torsion, structural behaviour under applied forces in buckling, straight and curvilinear beam bending measurements, calculations and stress analysis of trusses, stress and strain measurements, thin and thick cylinders etcetera.

Engineering Workshop-I (Machine Tools)
For this workshop, state-of-the-art and highly accurate lathe and milling machines have been procured from international vendors to provide our students with hands-on experience on the lines of industrial trends. The coursework is aimed to enhance the students learning in machining of wood and metal parts as they are processed at industrial workshops. The variety of cutting tools available in the machine shop allow students to perform various operations including facing, turning, parting, threading, drilling, boring, knurling, slab milling, face milling and many more.

Engineering Workshop-II (Metal-work & Bench-fitting)
This section of the workshop has been designed to educate our students in bench fitting works carried out by hand tools. Students are made to practice essential wood and metal working jobs. A wide range of hand tools like chisels, planers, hand saws, mallets, files, marking gauges etcetera, are available for the students so that they can learn to perform related functions and eventually understand various jobs that are carried out manually. This is geared towards their understanding of Engineering Management on the shop-floor.

Engineering Workshop-III (Welding)
This shop has been equipped with Oxyacetylene Flame, Metal Inert/Active Gas and Electric Arc welding equipment. Under the guidance of trained instructors, students are taught to perform welding operations to form metallic joints. The hands-on approach in this lab coursework is essential for their managerial role later on in the industries.

Metrology Lab
The Metrology Lab is situated alongside the Mechanical Workshops for the purpose of enhancing the accurate functionality of the workshops with the use of wide range instruments like height gauges, vernier calipers, micrometers etcetera. With the help of these tools, students can perform a check on dimensions with accuracy and precision. This lab consists of chosen instruments ranging from Mitutoyo for a reliable assessment of results through high repeatability in readings.

Thermo-Fluids Lab
Thermo-fluid lab is developed for demonstrating and understanding of the laws of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. The training units are available in order to help the students understand the mechanisms of fluids such as those presented in Bernoulli theorem, the Venturi principle, turbines, and characteristics of pumps in their different modes of functioning. While the thermodynamics section covers working mechanism of heat pumps, steam engine mechanism and different refrigeration and air conditioning cycles . The lab also has cut-out Engine modules (both petrol and diesel IC engines) to give an in-depth understanding of the working of IC engines. A combustion unit is also present for testing of different gases under controlled combustion processes. Heat Transfer equipment based on the principles of conduction, convection and radiation has also been successfully deployed in this lab as per the curriculum requirement.

Computer Science Labs
Computer Science Laboratories at DSU provide students with hands-on experience in analysis, design, coding, and testing activities for computational problems. Computing tools and devices are powered with state-of-the-art data center to assist in the construction and analysis of computing intensive applications. The laboratory experiences provide opportunity to students to explore and learn core computing practices and prepare for industrial liaison and entrepreneurship. The Computer Science department at DHA Suffa University has established following labs to cater the students’ and researchers’ needs.

Programming Lab
The Programming Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art thin-client computer systems powered by the DSU Data Centre. Its major purpose is to provide students with an environment conducive to learning problem solving and computer programming. The students, under supervision of highly experienced instructors, learn about latest programming methodologies, tools and paradigms. The thin-client systems have access to latest program design software, compilers and IDEs. This exclusive learning environment fosters effective problem solving skills in students and help them in competing with students from other universities in various programming competitions. This lab has been the venue for various programming competitions hosted by the Computer Science Department.

Computing Lab
The Computing Lab is a fully furnished spacious lab well-equipped with 60 state-of-the-art thin-client computer systems featuring the latest technology paradigms and tools powered by the DSU Data Centre. The systems have both Open-source and Proprietary Operating Systems so that the students are equally skilled on both environments. The foremost purpose is of this lab is to provide students with a computing environment where they work on various latest software and tools and gain hand-on experience. The lab has an optical fibre communication link with the DSU Servers, allowing students to access various resources including HEC’s Digital Library, Internet, DSU Learning Management System, etc. for educational purposes. The computing lab is also powered with latest software including software for Database Management System, Network simulation, Software Engineering design, etc.

Digital Systems Lab
This lab is equipped with state-of-the-art computers that can perform computation intensive tasks. The lab is dedicated for teaching of advanced courses in Computer Science and Information Technology. It will be beneficial for final year projects, elective courses and MS/PhD courses. The lab has special support for creation of database applications and mobile applications.

Advance Computing Lab
The purpose of this lab is to allow students to develop and test electronic circuits to implement hardware. This lab is designed to enable students to learn fundamental concepts in embedded digital system design and to give students hands-on experience of Microcontroller, Microprocessor and FPGA teaching kits. This lab is equipped with state of the art electronic equipment including digital oscilloscope, function generators, spectrum analyzers and digital multi-meters. The lab is equipped with 25 workbenches and can accommodate 40 students at a time. Each workstation has a thin client computer connected to DSU’s application server, enabling students to use various simulations & design software. The lab also has a white board and a portable multimedia projector.

Ubiquitous Lab
The Computer Science department of DSU has constructed specialized labs that support Mobile Computing, Game Development, and Graphics. Mobile Computing Lab is equipped with devices supporting operating systems including Android, iOS, and Windows Mobile to provide students with an environment where they can work on the Ubiquitous Computing. The graduate students work on dedicated Graduates Computing Lab in which they work on data and computing intensive problems.
