QEC Awareness Seminar

Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) conducted a QEC Awareness Seminar on Friday 28 March, 2014. Engr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director QEC, conducted this session. The seminar was attended by all the Faculty members and Head of Departments. This seminar’s main purpose was to bring awareness to all the members about the QEC working and procedures. The presentation focused on the purpose of QEC in DHA Suffa University and its benefits to the University as a whole. It ended on the note of frequent meetings with the members and their role in QEC.

Performance of QEC

DSU was represented by Engr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director QEC, at the seminar “Indentifying KPI’s of Academic and Administrative units “conducted by Dr. Muhammad Addul Wahid Usmani, Consultant for the Deanship of Quality & Head of Quality & Strategic Planning, King Saud University, Riyadh, on 12th August 2014.

The seminar was organized and hosted by Indus University. Executives from Karachi based QECs participated in the seminar.

HEC Video Conference on Academic Integrity & Plagiarism

On August 27, 2014 Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC ) Team and faculty members of DHA Suffa University participated in International Video Conference on the topic of “Academic Integrity and Plagiarism” by joining the conference from the DSU-campus. Presenter was Ms. Randa Al Chidiac, Executive Director, Library, Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK), Lebanon. All HEC recognized universities throughout Pakistan were invited by HEC to participate in the conference from their respective locations.

The conference was chaired by Advisor (Quality Assurance), HEC Islamabad. The video conference was much appreciated by all the participants as the topic is of an immense importance in the field of academia The conference was third in the series of video conferences organized in the month of August 2014 by Quality Assurance Division of HEC as part of its efforts in updating HEC’s Plagiarism Policy and increasing awareness about international practices regarding Plagiarism. The earlier two video conferences were attended by QEC Team of DSU on 5th and 6th August, 2014 at HEC’s Karachi Regional Center.

Meeting of QECs of Private Sector DAIs

On Tuesday, 15 December, 2015, the Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) of Ziauddin University organized a meeting of QECs of all private sector DAIs of Karachi at Ziauddin University, Clifton.

The meeting was chaired by Dr. Pirzada Qasim Raza, Vice Chancellor, Ziauddin University.

The QEC teams of all DAIs exchanged notes and shared best practices in Quality Assurance employed by their respective universities. The meeting provided representatives of various universities with an interactive platform to learn from each other.

Mr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director QEC, DSU introduced the university and discussed the activities undertaken at DSU during the last two years. He said that the process of quality improvement is like moving a wheel on a slope. The moment it pauses, a downward movement sets in. The audience was also informed about the commitment and support of the top management and teaching departments at DSU in enabling the QEC to submit SARs to HEC on time. The best practices of performance evaluation and student surveys employed at DSU were also presented.

DSU participates in National Higher Education Conference

Rear Admiral (R) Prof. Dr. Sarfraz Hussain, TI(M), SI(M), Vice Chancellor, DSU and Mr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director QEC, DSU were invited by Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM) and Success Foundation to attend the National Higher Education Conference on the theme of “Quality in Higher Education: Issues and Current Practices”. The conference was attended by the Vice Chancellors and Director QECs of various universities in Karachi. Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman, HEC presided the conference. The conference was held on February 3, 2016 at Pearl Continental Hotel, Karachi.

The attendees deliberated over issues related to higher education in Pakistan and discussed methods to enhance the quality of higher education in Pakistan.

DSU signs MoU with PSQCA

On February 23, 2016, DSU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pakistan Standards and Quality Control Authority (PSQCA) to develop bilateral cooperation on a range of disciplines concerning Standardization and Quality Assurance.

Rear Admiral (R) Prof. Dr. Sarfraz Hussain, TI(M), SI(M), Vice Chancellor, DSU and Dr. Barkat Saeed Memon, Director General, PSQCA, signed the MoU document. The ceremony was attended by the PSQCA delegation comprising Mr. Ali Bux Soomro, Director National Enquiry Point (NEP-WTO), Mr. Dildar Ali, Assistant Director National Enquiry Point (NEP-WTO) and Mr. Irshad Ali Ansari, Director Legal. The host team from DSU included Director Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), Dean, Engineering and Applied Sciences (EAS), Dean, Economics and Management Sciences (EMS), Registrar, Heads of Departments (HoDs) and relevant staff members.

Under this MoU, PSQCA will assist, support and facilitate DSU in developing standardized and quality assured education programs. It will also provide National and International Standards and Quality Control procedures to DSU in order to eliminate gaps in technology.

In addition, the MoU focuses on sharing human and material resources in order to promote need-based/demand-driven standardization, quality-controlled education programs and transfer of technology to the industry. Thus, DSU and PSQCA shall share human and material resources with each other to jointly initiate, explore and undertake market-oriented research, development projects and other activities of mutual interest benefiting both parties.

HEC appreciates Quantitative Assessment of Internal Quality Assurance at DSU

As per the mandate of the Quality Assurance Agency of Higher Education Commission (QAA-HEC), all Degree Awarding Institutions (DAIs) in Pakistan must assess internal quality through the use of scorecard system on an annual basis.

In this regard, the progress in implementation of the Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) Mechanism at DSU was assessed on a range of pre-defined parameters for the period July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015. In this assessment, DSU obtained an overall score of 80% and has been acknowledged by the HEC for a well-organized acceleration in implementing the IQA Mechanism throughout DSU.

The Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) at DSU hopes to continue developing a “quality culture” through the IQA Mechanism.

Seminar on Internal Quality Assurance Mechanism

On March 17, 2016, Mr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director QEC, DSU organized a seminar on “Internal Quality Assurance Mechanism and the Role of Faculty Members”. The attendees consisted of faculty members from various departments of DSU.

The seminar was divided into three parts: inputs, processes and outputs. Mr. Nadyme began the seminar by introducing the concept of Self-Assessment Programs. He described the Assessment Model and led the audience through the self-assessment criteria established by the HEC. The criteria included salient inputs, such as curriculum design and organization, student support and advising, process control, institutional facilities and support, etc. The processes and outputs of the Self-Assessment Model were also discussed at length.

The seminar culminated with a question-and-answer session during which faculty members asked questions and expressed their concerns regarding improvement in programs.

DSU participates in Seminar on Triangulation of Teaching, Assessment and Learning Outcomes

Mr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC), DSU, represented DSU at the seminar “Triangulation of Teaching, Assessment and Learning Outcomes” conducted by Dr. Muhammad Abdul Wahid Usmani, Consultant, Deanship of Quality and Head, Quality and Strategic Planning, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia on July 27, 2016.

The seminar was organized and hosted by Indus University. Directors and team members of QECs of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Karachi participated in the seminar.

New Faculty Orientation – Fall 2016

An orientation program for the newly appointed faculty members was held on September 1, 2016 in the conference room. The objective of the program was to help the new faculty transition comfortably into their DSU faculty roles. The program focused on providing the new faculty members with requisite information and familiarity with facilities, policies and technologies of DSU through:

• A welcome address by Dr. Navid Jamil Malik, Director Professional Development Center

• Brief introductions of the new faculty members

• An overview of the DSU policies and regulations by Mr. Syed Mateen Hayder, Registrar

• Explanation of the criteria of quality at DSU by Mr. Akhtar Nadyme, Director Quality Enhancement Cell

• Salient features of the examination systems by Mr. Muhammad Saleem Khan, Controller of Examinations

• Introduction to the Professional Development Center by Dr. Navid Jamil Malik, Director Professional Center

• Presentation on the IT infrastructure and facilities by Mr. Immad Uddin, Manager IT (Systems)

• Address by Rear Admiral (R) Prof. Dr. Sarfraz Hussain, TI(M), SI(M), Vice Chancellor

The orientation program culminated with questions and answers and an interactive refreshment session.
